Cleaning Your Cubicle

6/29/2018 (Permalink)

You spend a lot of hours in your cubicle a week, 40 hours or more! It tends to get a little dirty and disorganized. It’s important to give it a good clean every once and a while so you can feel and be more productive. You should split everything into categories, so you’re not completely overwhelmed when you get down to business.

  1. Supplies: Take an audit of what all you need on your desk during the work day. Pens, sticky notes, a note pad, scissors, staplers, and tape? Those can all stay on your desk. Get a little cup for your writing utensils to keep them out of the way and not in a disorganized pile. Move anything else you don’t use to a neatly organized drawer in your desk.
  2. Papers: If you don’t need it: toss it. If you think you might need it, then try and file it away in hanging files or on manila folders on your desk. You can even scan it in and save a PDF of it later. Make sure to shred your papers if you throw them away, however.
  3. Food: Keep it off the top of your desk and put it in a drawer. Throw out that box of crackers you purchased 3 months ago and only ate once. Wash your dirty coffee mugs, dispose of your water bottles, and maybe put the 75 Chick-Fil-A Sauce packets you have in your desk in the break room.
  4. Clothing: Don’t have your closet at your desk. Keep a sweater on the back of your chair, and your gym clothes in a bag under your desk.
  5. Personal Stuff: Keep your decorative things down to three-five things only at your desk. small decorations, Framed pictures, and maybe even a fern are all great things to have on your desk. It’s okay to make your space your own and personalize it, just don’t go overboard. If you have lotions, hand sanitizer, or lip balm keep it in the top shelf of your desk or in your purse.

When you’ve got your space decluttered and clear, start giving it a deep cleaning! Dust and wipe down all the surfaces with a disinfectant wipe. Use some canned air to blow the food from your keyboard or turn it upside down over a trash can and give it a good shake, wipe down your computer screen, and enjoy your newly organized space!
